A couple things you should know about me:

-I love food

-I eat a lot of food ( just ask my wonderful wife :) )

One of my goals in life is to help change the way people view food. I want everyone to have a good relationship with food. Eating should not stress you out, nor should it be a mindless act.

Food is more than just a means of survival or the occasional (or frequent) indulgence. There needs to be a healthy balance.

So what does that mean?..

We need to view food differently.

Here are a few things to consider to help us see food in a new light. This is by no means an exhaustive list.

  • Food is a gift

If you look at the book of Genesis in the very first chapter we see God giving food to Adam and Eve. In fact, one of the first things God tells them is:

(paraphrased)

"Look at all these plants and trees with fruit on the earth. I am giving you all of them for food."

Free of charge.

And if that is not enough..

There is no denying our access and abundance of food is rare compared to the rest of the world. We are so very fortunate to live in a place with such a variety of easily accessible food.

We can fix a craving in an instant no matter the time or season. This is uncommon.

  • Food is a Tool

We have the ability to use food to achieve certain goals. We are able to change how our body performs and looks by simply altering what we eat.

Athletes utilize this benefit all the time.

Side note: I will discuss later how we can leverage food as a tool to manipulate our bodies.

  • Food is Medicine

Hippocrates, the Greek physician, once said:

"Let food by the medicine, and medicine be thy food"

I love this quote and it truly helped transform how I view food. Food not only heals, it prevents sickness.

How many times have you gone to the doctor and he or she prescribed: 1 apple 2x per day? I sure haven't, but that would be awesome!

Modern medicine is necessary for treating certain conditions and many of us would not be alive now without it. But how quick are we to pop another pill before looking at what we are eating, or what we could be eating.

I would like to see Hippocrates' way of thinking utilized more. Food should be our first line of defense when it comes to medicine.

Hopefully this has your gears turning a little bit. Enjoy the rest of your week and happy eating!
